Short answer
Pakistan’s dramas, songs and proverbs are the daily curriculum of its gender roles; reforming media narratives and moving to gender-neutral language is postmodern feminism applied to Pakistan.
1. Definition
Postmodern feminism is the school that deconstructs the narratives society builds, it objects to binary opposition, exposes language sexism, and shows how women are sexualized through language and media. Where earlier schools attacked laws (Liberal), the sexual hierarchy (Radical) or the economy (Marxist/Socialist), postmodern feminism attacks the stories, words and images through which gender itself is constructed.
2. Main Points
i. Objection to binary opposition. Society is structured on a binary: language constructs man and woman as total opposites, whatever one is, the other must be its reverse (strong/weak, active/passive, public/private). Building society on this opposition is itself a major social problem, because it forces every human trait to belong to one sex and be denied to the other.
ii. Power is associated with the man. The narratives society tells attach power, authority and decision-making to the male by default, the hero acts, the heroine waits; the man speaks, the woman is spoken about.
iii. Language sexism, language itself is male. The very words we think in carry the male as the standard: mankind for humanity, chairman for every chair, man-made for everything manufactured. A mind that thinks in male-default language reproduces male-default conclusions without noticing. (Remedy: gender-neutral language, humanity, chairperson, businessperson, camera operator.)
iv. Women are sexualized through language. Language, as set by literature and media, reduces women to bodies and objects: songs that symbolize a woman as a “tandoori murgi,” the “gold digger” label pinned on the woman while the dowry-taking man escapes it.
3. The Standing Example: Media Normalizing Violence
A clear example is the drama Nand: the husband’s sister is shown as the cruel home-wrecker; the brother backs her; and the wife is shown as “good” because she silently endures a slap, a wife who slaps back would be “bad.” Define the roles (wife / sister-in-law / husband) and the lesson: media normalizes domestic violence by rewarding endurance and vilifying resistance. This is postmodern feminism’s territory, the narrative, not the law, is doing the oppressing.
4. Criticism
By locating everything in language and narrative, the school can neglect material realities, the wage, the statute, the bruise, which the Liberal, Marxist and Radical schools keep in view.
5. Pakistan Link
