1. Introduction
“Language is gendered” is the claim of the Postmodern school, whose stance is that it deconstructs the narratives society builds, objects to binary opposition, exposes language sexism, and shows how women are sexualized through language and media. The implication of the phrase is precise and double. First, language is not a neutral carrier of thought: language shapes thinking unconsciously, so a mind that thinks in gendered words reaches gendered conclusions without noticing it has done so. Second, language itself is male, its defaults, insults, proverbs and honorifics were built around the man as the standard human, so every speaker inherits the bias with the vocabulary. This answer explains the mechanism and proves it with examples.
2. How Language Genders Thinking: the Mechanism
- Language works beneath awareness: nobody teaches a child that women are inferior as a lesson, but the child absorbs it as vocabulary, through proverbs, jokes, insults and defaults, which is why the bias is so durable.
- This is the shared ground of two schools: the Postmodern school’s language sexism, and the Psychoanalytical school’s stance that gender exploitation is rooted in the psyche and transmitted unconsciously through language.
- The mechanism in one sentence: society writes its gender rules into the dictionary, and every speaker then enforces rules they never consciously learned.
3. The Examples: Pakistani and Universal
(a) Woman as weakness and insult
- “Woman” is used as a synonym for weakness and shame, as when a political leader was famously told to “become a man first”, although in this region those who stood against dictatorship were women: Benazir Bhutto, Sheikh Hasina, Indira Gandhi.
- The preference sentence “send a boy, not a girl” encodes in five words the entire doctrine that a beta is better than a beti.
- An educated woman minister is mocked as a “tractor trolley,” her body discussed in place of her mind, although the state’s own CSS forms ask for no candidate’s height or colour, because policy-making needs minds, not appearances.
(b) The gendered slur and the gendered label
- “Khwaja sira” and “trans” are used as insults, which first turns a community into objects and then into slurs, language completing the exclusion the society began.
- The “gold digger” label attaches by language to the girl, although the boy who takes dowry (the car, the furniture, the gold) is the real gold digger, and the girl who wants a stable partner is labelled for wanting what she was made dependent enough to need.
(c) The proverb as carrier
- The proverb “gareeb ki joru sabki bhabhi” (a poor man’s wife is everyone’s sister-in-law) encodes the idea that a woman attached to a powerless man is common property, a full theory of gendered power in six inherited words.
(d) The male default
- English itself defaults to the male: mankind for humanity, chairman for every chair, man-made for everything manufactured, the philosopher who uses reason to guide him, the man installed as the standard human, the woman as the exception.
- Even technology inherited the default: the word “CEO” once produced a male emoji, and it had to be consciously corrected to show both.
(e) The grammar of honor
- The language of “lost izzat” performs the debate’s darkest trick: a society that says a raped woman has “lost her honor” has, in its very grammar, transferred the crime from the criminal to the victim.
4. The Remedy: Gender-Neutral Language
- The remedy implied by the diagnosis is gender-neutral, non-sexist language, replacing the male default with the human default.
- Write journalist, not newspaperman; representative, not Congressman; businessperson, not businessman; camera operator, not cameraman.
- Write humanity or human beings, not mankind; human achievement, not man’s achievement; synthetic, manufactured or machine-made, not man-made; average or ordinary person, not common man.
- Write “the philosopher uses reason to guide them,” not “him.”
- The remedy’s logic is the mechanism reversed: if gendered language installs the bias unconsciously, neutral language uninstalls it the same way, one corrected default at a time.
5. Conclusion
“Language is gendered” implies that the battle over gender is fought inside grammar before it is fought anywhere else. Language shapes thinking unconsciously, language itself is male, and the examples run from the insult (“become a man first”) to the preference (“send a boy”), from the slur to the label (“gold digger”), from the proverb to the default (“mankind”), to the grammar that makes a victim “lose” the honor her attacker should have lost. The implication for reform is equally linguistic: adopt the neutral default, journalist, businessperson, humanity, because a society that changes what it says begins, unconsciously and permanently, to change what it thinks.
