1. Introduction

Gender Studies is the discipline in which we study the matters of gender and of sex, where sex means the biological aspect, not the physical act. In its simplest working definition, Gender Studies is the study of gender: its identity and its representation, what identity a gender takes on, and how it represents itself in society. The discipline is young, it grew out of an older discipline called Women’s Studies, and it is built from the contributions of many other subjects at once. This answer defines the discipline, separates it from its parent, traces why the separation became necessary, and explains its multidisciplinary construction.

2. Defining the Discipline of Gender Studies

The discipline rests on one foundational distinction, the difference between sex and gender, because the entire subject exists in the space between those two words. Sex refers to the biological and physiological differences between male and female, it applies to all organisms including plants and animals, it is discrete (male, female, transsexual), and it is determined by nature at birth. Gender refers to the social, cultural, behavioral and emotional differences between men and women, it is used only for humans, it is fluid rather than fixed (Facebook’s detailed sign-up offers around 78 gender options), and it is determined by nurture, by the social cues an individual absorbs over a lifetime. Gender Studies is the discipline that studies this second, socially constructed category: the identities genders take, the roles assigned to them, and the ways they are represented.

3. The Differences Between Gender Studies and Women’s Studies

(a) Difference of definition

  • Gender Studies is the study of gender: it studies gender identity and gender representation, meaning what identity a gender takes and how it represents itself.
  • Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary study of all matters related to women, the roles they take, the experiences they live, and the achievements they earn in society.

(b) Difference of focus

  • Gender Studies focuses on women’s studies, men’s studies, and queer studies together, the entire spectrum of LGBTQ+ identities falls under queer studies.
  • Women’s Studies focuses on women only.
  • Therefore Gender Studies has a broader focus, and Women’s Studies has a narrower focus.
  • Gender Studies also studies the newer genders being recognized over time, which Women’s Studies by definition cannot.
  • Gender Studies studies the interaction between all kinds of genders, while Women’s Studies studies interactions with women only.

(c) Difference of origin

  • Women’s Studies emerged as a subject in the late 1960s, born from the energy of the second feminist wave.
  • Gender Studies came out of Women’s Studies, and it gained its real focus and speed around the 2000s.

(d) Substantiating examples

  • An example of the focus difference: the mental health of men, the construction of masculinity, and the discrimination faced by transgender persons are all Gender Studies questions, but none of them is a Women’s Studies question, a Women’s Studies course would study the mental health of women, and stop there.
  • An example of the interaction difference: the relationship between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law belongs to both disciplines, but the relationship between a father and the son he trains into masculinity belongs to Gender Studies alone.
  • An example that unites them: honor killing is studied in Women’s Studies as a crime against women, while Gender Studies additionally asks what concept of male “honor” produces the killer, the victim’s discipline versus the whole system’s discipline.

4. Historically Tracing the Need for Gender Studies as a Distinct Discipline

  • Women’s Studies arose in the late 1960s because the existing disciplines had erased women: history remembered male rulers for their wars while remembering Cleopatra for her beauty, and science could name a hundred male scientists against one Madame Curie.
  • Over time, however, Women’s Studies revealed its own limitation, because studying women alone could describe the victim but not the system, discrimination is a relationship, and a relationship cannot be understood by studying only one of its parties.
  • Three needs therefore forced the wider discipline into existence. First, the need to study men and masculinity, because the oppressor’s construction is as important as the oppressed’s suffering. Second, the need to study other genders, because the male, female binary excluded transgender and queer persons entirely. Third, the need to study gender itself as a social construction, because the question shifted from “what happens to women” to “how does society manufacture gender roles at all.”
  • Gender Studies answered all three needs, and by the 2000s it had grown out of its parent into a distinct discipline, related to Women’s Studies as a building is related to its foundation.

5. The Multidisciplinary Nature of Gender Studies

“Multi” means many and “discipline” means subjects, so the multidisciplinary nature of Gender Studies means that many different disciplines impact and contribute to Gender Studies. An analogy makes it plain: Gender Studies is like a dish that only comes into existence when many different ingredients are added, different disciplines put in their input, and together they form the subject.

(a) Interdisciplinary vs multidisciplinary

  • Interdisciplinary means taking the existing theories of sociology, psychology, economics and literature and fitting them into gender, nothing new is created, and gender theorists work onward with the borrowed frameworks.
  • Multidisciplinary means the borrowed theories are used and the scholars of those fields collaborate, they build new theory together and conduct further joint research.
  • Both words are used for Gender Studies. ”

(b) The proof from feminist theory itself

  • The types of feminism: liberal, radical, Marxist, socialist, psychoanalytical, postmodern, are, with the word “feminism” removed, the classic theoretical perspectives of IR and the other social sciences.
  • This proves the point in one glance: feminism was explained by borrowing the liberal worldview, the Marxist worldview, the psychoanalytical method and the postmodern critique, which means different subjects visibly came together to build the discipline.

(c) The discipline-by-discipline links

  • Sociology contributed the subject’s foundational word, because the term “gender” itself is said to have been coined by sociology and borrowed from it.
  • Economics contributes the analysis of resources, jobs, and supply and demand as they strike men and women differently, most Pakistani women are unemployed or confined to the informal sector, and women’s uncounted informal labor is estimated to be worth around two to three trillion dollars if included in the economy.
  • History and anthropology contribute the record of unequal portrayal, because male rulers are remembered for the wars they won while Cleopatra is remembered for her beauty, the discipline studies why the record was written that way.
  • Political science contributes the study of women in the political arena, where an entire literature documents how differently women are treated as voters, candidates and representatives.
  • The natural sciences contribute by their own absence of women, because a field where most people can name no female scientist besides Madame Curie is itself a gender finding.
  • Psychology contributes the study of the gendered mind, and it is one of the only fields to have focused seriously on women’s mental health, while its comparative neglect of men’s mental health is itself a Gender Studies observation.
  • given any general subject, environment, computer science, linguistics, the same linking logic applies, because every discipline treats men and women differently and therefore has something to teach Gender Studies.

6. The Status of Gender/Women’s Studies in Pakistan

  • In Pakistan the discipline entered the universities through Women’s Studies centres established at public universities, and it later broadened into Gender Studies departments in line with the global shift.
  • Fatima Jinnah Women University stands as the standing example of institutionalized women’s education and study in Pakistan.
  • The discipline holds national visibility through the CSS examination itself, where Gender Studies is an optional subject, the very paper this answer is written for is proof of the subject’s official status.
  • The status remains constrained in practice, because the subject is taught mainly at the university level rather than at school level, while the reform argument is that gender should be taught early and interlinked with all subjects, to men and transgender students as much as to women.
  • The honest summary of the status: officially recognized, academically established, socially resisted, the subject exists in the universities of a society that still questions why it should exist at all.

7. Conclusion

Gender Studies is the study of gender, its identity and its representation, standing on the foundational distinction between biological sex and socially constructed gender. It differs from its parent, Women’s Studies, in definition, in focus and in origin: the parent studies women, while the child studies the whole system of genders and their interactions, because history proved that the system cannot be understood through one of its parties alone. And the discipline is multidisciplinary by construction, assembled from sociology’s vocabulary, economics’ measurements, history’s omissions, political science’s arenas and psychology’s mind, many ingredients, one dish. In Pakistan the subject is officially established and socially resisted at once, which is perhaps the strongest argument for its necessity: a society that resists the study of gender is a society whose gender arrangements cannot survive being studied.
