radical feminism: CSS Gender Studies solved answer

Radical Feminism: CSS 2024 Short Note

Exam question: CSS 2024: Short note: Radical Feminism.

Syllabus area: Section III: Feminist Theories and Practice of CSS Gender Studies.

Short answer

Radical feminism’s diagnosis fits Pakistan perfectly, the Aurat Foundation estimates a large majority of Pakistani women face domestic violence, all filed under “family matters”, but its separatist cure does not; Pakistan borrows its diagnosis (“the personal is political”) far more than its solution.

1. Definition

Radical feminism holds that women’s exploitation exists because women enter sexual contact with men, the male active, the female passive, and this hierarchy carries into daily life. The system built on it is patriarchy. The man becomes the active, dominant figure of household and society; the woman the passive, subordinate one. The enemy is therefore not bad laws but patriarchy itself, the fundamental cause of oppression, which cannot be reformed from within.

2. Objectives

1. Launch a war against sex: women should refuse the sexual role with men; where children are desired, science (IVF) can replace sexual contact.

2. Challenge traditional roles: break the division of life into “man’s work” and “woman’s work.”

3. Eliminate patriarchy: attack the fundamental cause of oppression directly; patriarchy is dangerous.

4. Represent women as a class: women share common interests as a group and should organize as one.

5. Oppose prostitution and pornography: which institutionalize the sexual use of women.

6. End the gendered upbringing of children: the mobile phone, internet access and freedom given to the brother must not be denied to the sister.

3. The Slogan: “The Personal is Political”

Radical feminism powered the Second Wave under this slogan. Matters dismissed as “personal,” “domestic” or “family affairs”, a slap, domestic violence, a sister denied her property, harassment in the home, are failures of justice and law and order, and therefore state issues. Society calls them private precisely to keep them beyond accountability; radical feminism drags them into the public, political sphere. (Anchor text: Kate Millett, Sexual Politics, like politics, sex is power-oriented: one sex dominant, the other powerless.)

4. Criticism

1. It disturbs the family system and disregards women’s own physiological needs.

2. Its programme is unrealistic: separatism and a “war against sex” cannot be practiced in ordinary societies.

3. Sex is not the only source of exploitation: its biggest criticism. The economic system, institutions and wider gender power relations also exploit women, the gap Marxist and Socialist feminism later filled.

5. Pakistan Link
